Deep Cycle Batteries
Deep Cycle Batteries have an extended life span and can sustain power over a longer timeframe. These types of batteries are most commonly found in motor boats, jet skis, recreational vehicles like ATV’s and even golf carts.
Starting, Lighting and Ignition Batteries
This is the most common type of battery that almost 80% of cars use. They are called Starting, Lighting and Ignition Batteries or SLI’s in short. The battery type does more than just start your car. They are high output batteries that not only start the car but provide power to core car electronic functions like infotainment, ECU and safety systems.
These batteries take a longer time to deplete which is known as a shallow charge cycle. They’re perfect this way as it charges back up before it can be completely depleted. This is why it’s commonly known a dead battery when the charge depletes faster than its recharge.
Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid Batteries
These batteries are also commonly referred to maintenance free batteries. They are usually sealed which makes it easy to place them in multiple positions and they’re also perfect for use in vehicles that are used in very unstable environments. Since they are maintenance free, most of these battery types are not serviceable and need to be replaced when they lose their charge.
The two most common types of VRLA batteries are Gel Cel Batteries and Absorption Glass Mat (AGM) batteries. AGM types provide a higher rate of power output due to their ability to have faster reactions between the electrolyte and fiberglass surface mat.
Gel Cell batteries on the other hand contain a silica based electrolyte and they work best on deep cycle applications like motor boats and recreational vehicles. Their main disadvantage though is that they do not function well in extreme heat or cold temperatures.
Lithium-Ion (Li-ion) Batteries
This battery type is a more recent innovation in battery types and are mainly used in electric cars like the Tesla or in Hybrid cars like the Prius. Lithium or Li-ion batteries have high energy capacities and are usually a fraction of the weight of lead-acid batteries. They’re biggest downside is that they’re not serviceable and most of these battery types last anywhere between 3-5 years until they start losing charge significantly.
Wet Cell Batteries
This battery type has been around the longest. They’re also commonly found in older cars and large trucks. This battery uses a liquid compound of Sulfuric Acid and Water that functions as the electrolyte.
This battery is typically the cheapest battery option and does require maintenance that increases over time as the battery loses charge from daily use. This is also one of the reasons why modern cars use VRLA maintenance free batteries because they’re more convenient.
